BELOW GROUND

HomeSpatialIsaac Powell

The building is enhanced by fluid façades, reinforced skylights, reflected ceiling panels, modular walls, and a multi-purpose theatre space.
Existing main entrance with rammed earth façade that wraps the exterior of the building.
In the reception, skylights animate and connect the spaces above and below.
Within the multi-purpose theatre space in the basement, the ground below has been exposed to reflect the journey taken through the layers of earth.

Bachelor of Design with Honours

BELOW GROUND is an adaptive reuse of the abandoned Capital Discovery Place, within Te Ngākau Civic Precinct. This project builds on narratives informed by the sculpture Te Aho a Māui reflected through architectural interventions into the building envelope. The design imitates the layers of the land, descending into the earth as you descend through the building. Through this restoration, the design creates a resilient, attractive, flexible environment that animates the surrounding precinct, supporting urban growth.
