ArchiPelago

As the islands relocate they adapt to and embrace the changing environment as well as the multiple species that inhabit these locations.
In 2022 ArchiPelago provides additional recreation and habitation opportunities on top of those that are presently at Oriental Bay.
In 2200 the islands will be together as one again, settled into wetland surrounded by native harakeke and toetoe.

ArchiPelago is a speculative response to anticipated sea level rise in Wellington over the next 200 years. A series of islands affords a variety of recreation and inhabitation opportunities for humans and non-humans, replacing and altering the existing activities of Oriental Bay as the beach gradually disappears. Once the urban coastline changes and the Basin Reserve eventually returns to swamp, the islands can relocate inland to regenerate the wetlands as the new waterfront playscape.
